Does New to Service electrical equipment need to be tested an tagged?

In Australia new to service equipment does not need to be electrically tested, however, all new to service equipment still requires a visual inspection and to be tagged. This requirement is outlined in Section 2.5.2.1, AS/NZS 3760:2022.

New to service tags can be applied to any brand new equipment that is made to Australian Standards and is entering into service for the first time. New To Service tags cannot be use for second hand or used equipment.

When conducting a visual inspection the person inspecting should look for manufacturing faults and damage that may have occurred during transit. If there are any signs of prior use or damage the item should not be put into service until it has been inspected, tested and tagged by a qualified person.

How To Tag New To Service Electrical Equipment.

Follow the steps below to introduce new electrical equipment into service:

1. Conduct a visual inspection.

DO NOT place equipment into service if damaged, if the equipment has signs of prior use or any abnormalities are present. If in doubt have the item tested and tagged by a qualified person.

2. Ensure equipment is brand new and is manufactured to Australian Standards.

3. This step is optional, but we recommend you complete a ‘New To Service Register’ log. Keeping record of new to service equipment will help ensure items don’t get missed when routine test and tag is due. ‘New To Service Register’ includes an item description, item location and tag number for identification.

4. Complete the relevant blank fields on the new to service tag.

5. Attach the tag to the equipment before using.
